Japanese Garden Bridge Stones
December 23, 2011
There are a number of bridge styles to choose from when creating a Japanese garden. They vary in shape, materials and the way in which they are constructed. In this garden we used a flat single stone slab bridge with no center support. Natural stones that are just the right length, width and thickness can be hard to find, so be prepared to spend some time locating the right stone. This is especially true when a longer natural stone is needed, as the long ones are often too thick. We chose limestone to compliment other limestone elements within project. Single slab stone bridges, like the one in the picture of our project, are quite common in small residential gardens in Japan. Bridge stones like this are often anchored with large support stones directly under each end of the bridge. The anchor stones on the corners of the bridge stone typically appear to support the bridge, but are actually only for aesthetic purposes.
