Deck Ideas
January 26, 2012
The decks being built today have come a long way when compared to the decks of the early 1980’s. Clients are hiring us to design and build decks with a creative touch, wanting more than a simple wooden rectangle. In addition to the many options like multiple levels, separate living areas, storage areas, creative shapes, benches, sculpture niches, flower boxes and over head structures for shade and scale. Below are some ideas and considerations when designing and building a decking.
Although the most common decking materials in the US are treated pine, redwood or cedar, the use of synthetic lumber and exotic hardwoods is becoming more common. We have used ipe’ or tiger decking for the majority of our deck projects. Ipe’ and other exotic wood decking materials and incredibly durable and long lasting. Ipe’, for example, is six times harder than cedar and can last up to 50 years. Thanks to the consumer demand for decking materials other than wood, Synthetic decking products have also come along way. There are a number of products, offering a wide variety of designs, patterns and colors. In addition to decking materials there are also many railing options to choose from. Before making your choice you should consider your options and your goals. If you are looking for an uninterrupted view you should consider cable or tempered glass railings. For a contemporary look consider using architectural panels framed by the posts and rails. There is a number of aluminum railing systems with a variety of options. If you want to keep it simple, take a look at the different baluster products, many of which easily attach to wooden railings supported by your railing posts.
When designing your deck you should first become familiar with your property and determine your buildable area. In addition you should contact your city planning department and ask about local codes and permit requirements. Once that is done you can then identify what you will be using your deck for, for example; cooking, dining and lounging. From there you can start to create the different rooms you need and set them apart by a change in material, grade change, a screen, etc. You can also determine how much space you will need for each room. If you are planning to use a large gourmet grill you should determine the size of the grill and make you create a space that it will fit in. Keep your outdoor cooking room close to your indoor kitchen and your outdoor dining for convenience. If you want an elaborate outdoor kitchen you need to learn more about the specific products and codes for your area. When creating the dining area ask yourself how many people you want to be able to accommodate and select a table and design a space that fits both. Ask yourself similar question about your lounge area and design the furniture layout, or space plan, as part of your deck design. You will be happy when you are finished and start looking for furniture and accessories for your new outdoor rooms.
Lastly, you can add a splash of color with cushions, umbrellas, flower pots and decorative screens.
